THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
June 11, 1975 ... Carl Yastrzemski's sixth homer in the 14th inning, gave the Red Sox a 9 to 7 win in Chicago. Yaz's shot to left came off Goose Gossage, after Gossage had hit Bernie Carbo with a pitch, who then stole second. The homer erased a come-from-behind effort by the White Sox, after they almost blew it in regulation. It was the second time this year that Yaz had won a game with a walk-off blast. Taking advantage of fielding blunders, the Red Sox scored four runs in the second inning with the help of three Chicago errors. Tim McCarver reached on a lead-off double that Ken Henderson let get over his head. Rico Petrocelli returned to the Red Sox lineup and got on when Jorge Orta booted his grounder that scored McCarver. Then Rick Miller, who sacrificed Rico to second, was safe when Chicago starter, Stan Bahnsen threw his bunt away. Doug Griffin's base hit scored Petrocelli and sent Miller over to third. Bernie Carbo grounded into a doubleplay and Miller scored. After Rick Burleson reached because Buck Dent threw his grounder away, Yaz drew a walk. Fred Lynn drove in Burleson with the base hit that put the Red Sox ahead, 4 to 1. It all erased the lead the White Sox took in the first inning when Carlos May singled in Bob Coluccio and stole second off Bill Lee. The White Sox got a run back in the third inning on May's fourth home run of the year with none aboard, and tied it at 4-4 on Dent's two-run triple in the fourth inning that brought in Downing, who had walked and Coluccio, who had singled. The Red Sox scored a go-ahead run in the fifth. Yaz singled and moved to second on a walk to Lynn. Yaz scored on McCarver's ground out. The next inning the Red Sox scored again on a Chicago miscue. Miller singled and Bahnsen tried to pick him off first, but threw the ball into right field, allowing him to get to third, and he scored on Griffin's base hit, for a 6 to 4 lead. Bill Lee stayed in the game until the sixth inning when the White Sox collected a run on an error by Petrocelli, a single by Coluccio and a sacrifice by Dent . Up 6-5, the Red Sox finally chased Stan Bahnsen off the mound after he gave up consecutive singles to Jim Rice and McCarver in the seventh inning. Petrocelli added another run on a base hit off Gossage, making the score 7-5. Brian Downing brought the White Sox back to within a run with his fourth home run, off Dick Drago, with nobody on base in the eighth inning. In the bottom half of the ninth inning Ken Henderson's line drive single drove across May, who had doubled to start the inning, with the tie run. Pat Kelly doubled and Bill Stein was next. Drago saved the game when Stein hit a vicious line drive right at him. Drago never flinched and stopped the ball from going into center field and driving home the winning run. Jorge Orta walked, filling the bases, and got Downing to pop out and send the game into extras. Rogelio Moret came in in the tenth inning to pitch the Red Sox out of a jam and then went the next 3 2/3 innings of pitching one-hit ball. Dwight Evans sat out with a bruised shoulder and Fred Lynn again hit successfully for 15 games in a row. |
