Five Sox errors ruin Jim
Burton's debut
June 12, 1975
...
The Red Sox committed five errors, two by Rico
Petrocelli, and the White Sox collected three infield hits on some
balls that took funny hops, to help ruin Jim Burton's debut in a 9 to
2 loss.
Burton's last start was a no-hitter at Pawtucket, but today he gave
up six runs, eight hits, struck out two and didn't walk anyone during
5 1/3 innings.
Burton gave up his first hit to Deron Johnson. Johnson connected for
his sixth home run, that hit the facade in left center, with none on,
in the second inning and Bob Coluccio homered in the third inning
after Brian Downing had reached on one of the bad-hop hits. The home
runs gave Chicago an early lead that they never surrendered, allowing
Jim Kaat to pick up his ninth win.
The White Sox added an unearned run in the fourth, four runs in the
sixth and another in the eighth. They made their dozen hits count,
stranding only four runners.
Burton was chased after Carlos May opened up the White Sox half of
the sixth inning with a double and Ken Henderson scratched a hit off
Burton's glove. The three singles of Burton's replacement, Reggie
Cleveland, around a throwing error by Cecil Cooper, contributed to a
four-run inning. Cooper had replaced Carl Yastrzemski at first base
in the third inning and accounted for another error. Doug Griffin and
Rick Burleson also added to the errors-committed list.
The loss shaved the Red Sox lead in the AL East to 1/2 game. Fred
Lynn kept his hitting streak alive at 16 games with a run-producing
single in the sixth inning. The Red Sox strung three singles by Juan
Beniquez, Rick Burleson and Cecil Cooper in the seventh inning for
another run. Beniquez knocked out three singles. |
