Dwight Evans scored the winning run when the Royals left the
plate unguarded on Tim Blackwell's slow tapper.
Blackwell's two-run infield single finished off a four-run eighth
inning that carried the Red Sox to an 8 to 7 victory over the Royals.
With one out, Fred Lynn singled off Lindy McDaniel, moved to second
on a wild pitch, and Jim Rice was walked intentionally before Rico
Petrocelli singled to score Lynn. Dwight Evans then singled to put
the Sox on top, 6-4, when Rice scored. Steve Mingori replaced
McDaniel and got Denny Doyle on a grounder that put runners on second
and third. Both scored on Blackwell's slow dribble in front of the
plate, that was fielded by Royals catcher, Fran Healy, who forgot to
get back and cover the plate. Evans, noticed this and continued
around third to score, making it an 8-4 game.
The Sox scored first in the game. Rick Burleson singled in the first
inning and came home on a double by Lynn, extending his hitting
streak to 20 games. After Evans singled in the second inning, Doyle
drilled his first Sox homer into the right field seats, putting the
Sox up 3-0.
Fran Healy doubled in the third inning and scored Kansas City's first
run on a single by Fred Patek. Petrocelli started the Sox fourth
inning with a single, moved to second on a grounder and came home on
Blackwell's single for a 4-1 lead.
The Royals tied the game at 4-4, with three runs in the fourth
inning, on a double by Amos Otis, a single by Mayberry, Petrocelli's
throwing error and run-scoring singles by Frank White and Patek. The
Royals got two runs in their half of the eighth on singles by Frank
White and Cookie Rojas and one in the ninth on John Mayberry's
sacrifice fly.
