THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox outlast the Tigers
June 17, 1975
...
Juan Beniquez hit his second homer of the season with
two outs in the eighth inning, to give the Red Sox their fourth win
in a row, a 7 to 6 victory over the Tigers. Rick Wise luckily won his
seventh game, but needed help from four relief pitchers to get the
last nine Tiger batters
The Tigers starter, Lerrin LaGrow gave up four runs in the first
inning and took his sixth loss in ten decisions. The 4-0 lead came
when Bernie Carbo singled home Rick Burleson and Carl Yastrzemski,
who both reached on base hits. Rico Petrocelli then doubled home
Carbo and Rick Burleson, who had walked.
In the bottom half of the first, Dan Meyer brought in Ron LeFlore
with a base hit. Gary Sutherland, who had walked, and Meyer both
moved over to third on Wise's wild pitch. Willie Horton singled home
Sutherland and Leon Roberts' doubleplay grounder allowed Meyer to
score another run.
The Sox picked up a single run in the third when Carbo walked, move
to second on a wild pitch and scored on Denny Doyle's hit. The Tigers
got that run back in their half of the third inning. Wise walked
Horton and a base hit by Roberts preceded a base hit by John
Wockenfuss to end Wise's day.
Up 5-4 in the fourth inning, the Sox got their sixth run on a base
hit by Beniquez, who was sacrificed to second and brought in by Fred
Lynn.
Beniquez's home run gave the Sox a 7-4 lead in the eight and then the
Tigers rallied for two runs in their half. Ron LeFlore, who had four
hits in the game, tripled in a run off Diego Segui and then scored
Detroit's sixth and last run on a base hit by Gary Sutherland. In
came Rogelio Moret who walked Dan Meyer. In came Dick Pole who got
the next two batters out.
In the ninth with two outs, Pole gave up a hit to Wockenfuss. In came
Bill Lee who gave up a hit to Mickey Stanley. With two on, Dick Drago
came in to pitch to LeFlore who popped out to end the game. |
