FRED LYNN |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Fred Lynn has a defining moment
June 18, 1975
...
Fred Lynn drove in 10 runs with three home runs and a
triple, that just missed being a home run, to power the Red Sox to a
15 to 1 rout of the Detroit Tigers. Luis Tiant allowed just
three hits before Reggie Cleveland relieved him in the seventh
inning.
Lynn ripped Tiger starter for a two-run homer in the first inning and
a three-run blast in the second inning. He then slammed a two-run
triple in the third inning off Bob Reynolds. He beat out an infield
hit in the eighth inning then finished his night with a three-run
homer in the ninth inning off Tom Walker. His 50 RBIs gave him the
American League lead over Willie Horton who has 46 RBIs. He also led
the league with runs scored at 42. His slugging percentage (.648) led
the league also.
In the first inning Rick Burleson tripled with one out, off Tigers'
starter Joe Coleman, and scored on Carl Yastrzemski's double. Yaz
came in on Lynn's first homer of the game, a drive into the right
field upper deck. In the Tigers half, Gary Sutherland tripled and
scored on Dan Meyer's base hit, and so the Sox were up 4-1 after one
inning.
The second inning saw Burleson and Yaz collect their second hits of
the game. Lynn scored them both with another homer that landed on the
right field roof. The Sox lead was 7 to 1.
In the third inning the Sox went up 8 to 1. Lerrin LaGrow took over
for Coleman and gave up a base hit to Rico Petrocelli. Rico moved up
to second on a ball that got by the catcher John Wockenfuss. Juan
Beniquez scored Petrocelli with a base hit and Yaz picked up his
third hit of the game with a single off Bob Reynolds. Yaz's hit
brought in Beniquez and Lynn's triple, that bounced off the 15 ft
left field screen, allowed Yaz to walk in. Jim Rice reached when Tom
Veryzer bobbled his grounder and Lynn scored the Sox 12th run.
Reynolds kept the Sox in check and was relieved by Tom Walker in the
eight inning. Walker loaded the bases but worked out of trouble. But
in the ninth inning Fred Lynn got to Walker by slamming his third
home run of the game and 14th of the season, into the right field
upper deck again. Doug Griffin and Cecil Cooper were on base with
singles, so the score was now 15 to 1.
Lynn's 10 RBIs tied the Red Sox single game amount set by Rudy York
in 1946, and tied by Norm Zauchin in 1955. It was one short of the
American League record of 11 RBIs, set by Tony Lazzeri, of the
Yankees in 1936, and two short of the MLB mark of 12 set by Jim
Bottomley of St. Louis in 1924. The 16 total base tied an AL record
held by Ty Cobb (1925), Lou Gehrig (1932) and Rocky Colavito (1959).
Joe Adcock has the MLB record with 18 total bases.
The last Sox player to hit three home runs in a game was Joe Lahoud
in 1969. Along with Lynn, Yaz and Rico each had three hits, and
Burleson and Rice each had two. The win gave the Sox a 2 1/2 game
lead in the AL East. |
