A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Jim Palmer shuts down the Red Sox
June 21, 1975
...
Jim Palmer cooled off the hot bats of the Red Sox, becoming
the first 12-game winner in the major leagues, by beating the Sox 3
to 0. He struck out eight batters en route to his 11th complete game
and sixth shutout of the season. He lowered his ERA to a major league
leading 1.56, best among starting pitchers.
The Orioles bunched three of their seven hits off Dick Pole, for all
of their runs in the first inning. With two outs, Al Bumbry drew a
walk. Then Lee May, Don Baylor and Bobby Grich all singled for two
runs. Their third run scored when Rico Petrocelli bobbled a grounder
from Brooks Robinson.
Palmer faced a minimum 12 batters through the first four innings with
the aid of a doubleplay ball in the first inning, erasing an infield
single by Rick Burleson. Burleson picked up the Sox second hit in the
sixth inning and lined one back to Palmer to start a doubleplay in
the eighth, after Juan Beniquez reached on a single.
Palmer issued two walks in the fifth inning but got out of that jam.
And in the seventh inning, after Fred Lynn singled, he struck out the
next two batters and walked Petrocelli before Denny Doyle popped out. |
