Sox and O's split, Tiant wins
his 10th
June 22, 1975
...
Rico Petrocelli drove in the Sox first run in their last 22
innings, in the fifth inning of the second game, while Luis Tiant
scattered seven hits and struck out 12, carrying the Red Sox to a 5
to 1 victory over the Orioles, for a split of their doubleheader.
Mark Belanger's scratch hit in the second inning and Don Baylor's
two-run homer backed Mike Cuellar's six-hitter, giving the Orioles a
3 to 0 win in the opener.
The Orioles got their run in the fourth inning of the second game, on
a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Dave Duncan. Other than that they did
very little against Tiant, who picked up his 10th win.
The Sox had managed just 22 hits in the 34 innings that preceded
their two-run fifth inning. Then Juan Beniquez singled, stole second
and scored on Petrocelli's hit. Rick Miller brought in Denny Doyle
who had reached on a fielder's choice for the Sox second run.
In the sixth inning, Jim Rice drove in Fred Lynn with a double. Bob
Heise's RBI single made the score 4-1 in the seventh inning. And
finally, Beniquez scored Rice with the fifth Sox run in the eighth
inning.
Cuellar was aided by three double plays in the opening game and a
pickoff at first, befuddling Rick Wise who pitched his best game in a
month. Belanger's soft line-drive RBI single ticked of the glove of
Petrocelli and scored Bobby Grich in the second inning. Baylor added
insurance in the eight inning , bringing in Tony Muser, with his
two-run homer. |
