GEORGE HENDRICK |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Yaz's home run can't save the Sox
June 24,
1975 ...
Carl Yastrzemski hit a two-run homer in the eighth
inning to put the Sox temporarily out front, 6-4, before Cleveland
put together a winning rally the next inning.
George Hendrick's
second home run of the game, a two-out three-run shot in the ninth
inning, powered the Indians past the Sox, 8 to 6. The Indians
jumped on Bill Lee for six hits, including the two homers by
Hendricks and one by Charlie Spikes, and four runs in the first four
innings.
The Red Sox picked up two runs in the first inning. Down 1-0 on
Hendricks' first homer, Indians starter Jim Kern walked Bernie Carbo
who moved to second on Rick Burleson's grounder. Yastrzemski singled
home Carbo and went to second when Rick Manning bobbled the ball.
Fred Lynn scored him with a single to center to put the Sox out
front, 2-1. Spikes' homer tied up the game the next inning.
The Sox broke the tie with two runs in the third inning. With one out
Burleson singled up the middle. Fred Lynn drew a walk and Jim Rice
brought home Burleson with the go-ahead run, with a hit to center,
while Lynn scooted over to third. A perfect delayed double steal by
Lynn and Rice, brought Lynn home and put the Sox up 4-2.
But the Indians bounced back and tied up the game in the fourth
inning. Rico Carty singled and took third on a single by Spikes.
Frank Duffy forced Spikes at second, but Carty was able to score.
Then Duffy scored all the way from first on a double off the wall by
Alan Ashby, as Yaz who was playing left field, tried to get Ashby at
second.
Duffy led off the ninth with a base hit off Rogelio Moret, who had
relieved Bill Lee. After a walk, Duane Kuiper bunted into a force
play. Dick Drago came in and Boog Powell came in as a pinch hitter.
Powell doubled in one run to put Cleveland within a run, before
Kuiper was thrown out at the plate. Then Hendrick sliced a three run
homer into the right field seats for their fourth run of the inning
and an 8-6 lead. |
