THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Moret
stays undefeated in beating the Yanks
June 29,
1975 ...
Eighth inning doubles by Bernie Carbo and Rick Burleson
snapped a tie ballgame and lifted the Red Sox back atop the AL East,
with a 3 to 2 victory over the Yankees and Catfish Hunter.
With one out, Carbo laced a double to right-center and Burleson
followed that with a fly ball down the right field line, that bounced
into the seats. The ground-rule double put the Sox ahead by one to
stay, breaking a 2-2 tie.
Rogelio Moret picked up his fifth win after winning four out of the
bullpen, and remained undefeated. He had allowed only one hit until
Chris Chambliss opened the fifth with a homer into the Sox bullpen.
The Yanks picked up another run that inning on consecutive doubles by
Sandy Alomar and Bobby Bonds.
The Sox got one run back in their half of the fifth. Cecil Cooper
singled and came all the way around on Carlton Fisk's line drive into
the left field corner. They then tied up the game in the seventh with
the help of Cooper's third consecutive hit. Fred Lynn preceded that
by walking on four pitches, Cooper's single put Lynn on third and
Rico Petrocelli hoisted a pop fly to shallow center. Lynn easily beat
the throw of Walt Williams to tie the game.
Moret, whose lifetime record against the Yankees is 8-3, was helped
up by some solid defense. In the first inning, Carbo robbed Chambliss
of a home run with an outstanding catch leaning into the Yankee
bullpen. In the third inning, Denny Doyle ranged behind the bag and
grabbed a ball from Barry Bonds and then made an off-balanced throw
to get him at first. Yaz snared a line drive off the bat of Thurman
Munson in deep left center in the sixth. And in the eight, Rick
Burleson dove to his right, to snare a low line drive hit by
Williams. |
