YAZ'S SLAMS 2 HRs |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Yaz's
great performance goes for naught
June 28,
1975 ...
Walt Williams overshadowed a remarkable performance by
Carl Yastrzemski by hitting what looked like a routine putout, that
instead went for a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning and then
scored an insurance run in an 8 to 6 Yankees win over the Sox. And
thus the Sox fell back into second place, 1/2 game behind New York.
With the game tied at 6-6, Sandy Alomar opened the inning with a hit
off Reggie Cleveland but was forced at second by Bobby Bonds.
Williams the drilled a low skidding line drive at Rico Petrocelli,
who was playing in to guard against a sacrifice bunt. The ball went
between Rico's legs and bounced around by the garage door in the left
field corner. Bonds was able to core all the way from first with the
go-ahead run and Williams took third on Carl Yastrzemski's throw to
the plate. Thurman Munson's fly to right allowed Williams to score
another run.
The rally offset a slugging show by Yaz. He drove in four runs with
two homers and also added a double. Alex Johnson began the scoring
with a homer for the Yankees in the top of the first. Cecil Cooper's
triple and a sacrifice fly from Rick Burleson tied up the game in the
Sox half of the first inning.
Yaz gave the Sox a 2-1 lead with a solo homer in the fourth inning.
But the Yankees jumped all over Bill Lee with a five run fifth
inning. Lee had retired 10 batters before that.
Then in the sixth inning after two straight hit by Denny Doyle and
Cecil Cooper, Rick Burleson lined a base hit that scored Doyle. Yaz
then blasted a game-tying three run shot that chased starter, Doc
Medich off the mound.
Dick Tidrow shutout the Sox on three hits after that, pitching out of
trouble in the eighth, after two-out singles by Lynn and Rice. |
