THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Wise pitches the Sox past the Yanks
June 27,
1975 ...
Backed by the eight-hit pitching of Rick Wise, the Sox
regained first place in the AL East as they shut down the Yankees
with a 9-1 rout.
Doug Griffin drove in three runs with a double and a single. Rico
Petrocelli collected two RBIs while extending his hitting streak to
six games with a single and a double. Cecil Cooper entered the game
in the eight inning and knocked out his first home run of the season.
The Sox scored three runs in the second inning, two in the fourth and
three in the fifth, to make it easy sailing for Wise who picked up
his eighth win. The Sox managed just four hits in the first four
inning against Larry Gura but came out with a 5-0 lead.
A walk to Fred Lynn and singles by Rico Petrocelli and Carlton Fisk
pushed Lynn home with the first run. Griffin's double scored both
Rico and Fisk to put the Sox up 3-0. Walks to Petrocelli and Fisk
preceded another hit by Griffin to put two more runs on the board in
the fourth inning.
Dave Pagan, the second of three Yankee pitchers was nicked for three
runs in the fifth. Rick Burleson singled and made it over to third on
Carl Yastrzemski's double, the result of Walt Williams misjudging his
fly ball to left. Jim Rice brought Burleson in with a sacrifice fly
and Lynn was walked intentionally. Petrocelli then scored both
runners with a double.
Cooper added the ninth Sox run in the eight inning with a home run
but Bobby Bonds got that back with his home run in the ninth for the
only Yankee run.
There was a moment of silence before the game commemorating the 20th
anniversary of the passing of Harry Agganis in 1955. |
