Jim Willoughby bails out Rick Wise and the Sox
July 7,
1975 ...
Jim Willoughby earned his first save as a member of the Red
Sox, bailing out Rick Wise in a 6 to 3 win over the Minnesota Twins.
He struck out five batters, giving up two hits and a run in 2 1/3
innings of relief.
The Twins scored once in the first inning, but Jim Rice unloaded a
three run homer and Bob Heise drove in a run to stake the Sox to a 4
to 1 lead. Bernie Carbo started the Sox half of the first inning with
a triple to right-center. Twins starter, Jim Hughes walked Rick
Miller just before Rice hit a ball over the left field net. A single
to Dwight Evans, a walk to Rick Burleson, and another single by Doug
Griffin loaded the bases. Heise's grounder to Jerry Terrell forced
Griffin at second, but Evans scored the Sox fourth run on the play.
The margin grew to 5-1, when Griffin singled home Rice when Hughes
walked the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Wise's arm stiffened up
the next inning when the Twins were able to score their second run.
Jim Burton took over in the seventh inning, but let two men get to
second and third. Willoughby was called on and he struck out Eric
Solderholm to put out the fire. He notched two more strikeouts in the
seventh and eight innings and the struck out the side in the ninth,
but not before Rod Carew walked, stole second and scored on a base
hit by Tony Oliva. |
