A SEASON TO REMEMBER

Bob Heise steps up to help the Sox split
July 6, 1975
...
Bill Lee huffed and puffed his way to a
victory and Bob Heise drove in three runs, to lead the Red Sox to a 5
to 3 win in the first game of a doubleheader with the Cleveland
Indians.
Lee's 10th win of the year halted a four game losing streak and put
the Sox ahead in the AL East, when
the Brewers lost a doubleheader in Detroit. He didn't
walk a batter. In his last four starts, Lee has had three
no-decisions and one loss.
But the Sox could not gain a further lead in the standings when
Reggie Cleveland and the Sox bullpen could not hold back the Tribe
all day. Home runs by George Hendrick, Oscar Gamble and Boog Powell,
led the Indians to an 11-10 victory in the second game and a split.
In the opening game, Heise's bases-loaded single highlighted a four
run second inning against Jim Bibby. Bibby gave up four consecutive
hits to Cecil Cooper, Carlton Fisk, Rick Burleson and Rick Miller, to
account for one run. Heise chalked up the fifth hit in-a-row and it
scored Fisk and Burleson. Miller moved over to third and waited for
Bernie Carbo's flyball to left, to score the fourth Sox run.
The Indians made the score, 4-2 when Rico Carty knocked out his fifth
home run of the season, a two-run shot off Lee. Kuiper brought home
an unearned run in the fifth inning when Carlton Fisk's throw trying
to get Frank Duffy stealing second, went into center field.
The next inning, however, after Fisk walked and Miller reached on an
error by leftfielder, Rick Manning, that allowed Fisk to scoot over
to third, Heise's fly to center scored him with the fifth run.
In the second game, the Sox took a 5-0 lead in the second inning when
Bob Montgomery doubled and was brought across by Doug Griffin's base
hit after Cleveland starter, Jackie Brown, walked Rick Burleson.
Burleson scored on Heise's base hit and then Bernie Carbo reached on
a bobbled ball Duane Kuiper. Miller's triple to center scored both
Heise and Carbo with the fourth and fifth BoSox runs.
But Reggie Cleveland couldn't hold the lead. The Indians closed the
gap on Hendricks' two-run homer in the third inning, to 5-4. Gamble's
three-run blast highlighted a four-run fifth inning that put the
Indians up, 8 to 5. Powell's two-run homer into the upper deck, came
in the seventh inning and made the score 11-8, providing enough if a
margin to survive the two runs that the Sox scored the next inning.
It was an unlikely day with unlikely heroes for the Sox. Heise
stepped off the bench and rapped out four hits and five RBIs. Dick
Drago was superb in relief of Bill Lee in the first game. Fred Lynn
sat out both games, because of his sore hand. |
