Buddy Bell and the Tribe scalp
the Sox
July 5, 1975
...
Buddy Bell belted two home runs, one of them a grandslam, in
addition to an RBI double, while his pitcher, Roric Harrison, let the
Sox score two runs in just one inning, as the Sox went down to defeat
for the sixth time in their last seven games, 12 to 2.
Bell's homer, with the bases loaded, put Cleveland up 6-1 in the
second inning. All the runs were unearned because of a throwing error
by Denny Doyle. The slam chased starter Steve Barr, in his first
start since being called up from Pawtucket, and brought Jim Burton
into the game. Burton had to gut it out, since the game was a
runaway, and was tagged for six more runs.
Barr got into immediate trouble in the first inning. A walk to Duane
Kuiper, a stolen base and two ground balls, put him behind 1-0.
Charlie Spike then singled and when Barr tried to pick him off first,
away went the throw and Spikes was on third. John Ellis sacrificed
him in with a fly ball to Jim Rice. Then the flood gates opened.
Bell added another homer, a solo job, in the fourth and doubled home
another run in the eighth.
The Sox two runs came in the seventh inning. Rice reached on an
infield hit, was forced at second by Carlton Fisk. Then Harrison
walked Rick Miller. Doyle's single to left scored Fisk and Griffin's
hit to left scored Miller for the Sox second run.
Fred Lynn rode the bench, nursing a bruise on his right hand, and
Rico Petrocelli will be now wearing glasses. Rico was on a two week
tear and then slumped and saw his average dip to .235 from .254 ...
Jim Willougby showed up from Tulsa and will wear #38. |
