A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Sox lose their chance in
Cleveland
July 4, 1975
...
Oscar Gamble's two-run homer in the seventh inning, boosted
the Indians to a 3 to 2 victory over the Sox in Cleveland.
The Sox had moved ahead, 2-1, against Eric Raich in the top of the
seventh inning, on singles by Rick Miller and Cecil Cooper. An
intentional walk to Carlton Fisk followed by Denny Doyle's fly ball
scored Miller, with the tying run.
But in the bottom of the seventh, Luis Tiant walked George Hendrick
and gave up a shot over the centerfield fence to Gamble.
The Sox took the initial lead in the first inning. Carl Yastrzemski
slammed his 10th homer of the year to put the Sox ahead, 1-0. The
Indians came back in the third on a walk to John Ellis, a single by
Buddy Bell, a sacrifice bunt by Ed Crosby and a grounder by John
Lowenstein. Ellis beat Yaz's throw home and the game was tied.
Twice the Sox had runners on third base and couldn't score. In the
fifth, Jim Rice made it to third on a single, a stolen base and a
ground out. But a pop fly by Fisk and another ground ball by Doyle
ended the threat. An inning later, with one out, Bernie Carbo
tripled, but a grounder by Rick Burleson and a foul pop up by Yaz
stranded him.
Then in the ninth the Sox got Cecil Cooper and Tim Blackwell on with
one out. Dave LaRoche came in for the Indians, to strike out Dwight
Evans and Doug Griffin grounded out to end the game. |
