THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox chip away and come back again
July 11,
1975 ...
The Sox spotted the Rangers a 5-1 lead and
countered with a 16-hit attack, including a homer by Bernie Carbo and
six doubles,
to come back and take the game, 11 to 8,
for their fifth consecutive victory.
The Rangers got two-run homers from Jeff Burroughs in the first
inning, Mike Cubbage in the fourth inning and Toby Harrah in the
ninth inning.
Consecutive doubles by Cecil Cooper and Rick Burleson got the Sox a
run back in the fourth inning. Carl Yastrzemski got a hit with two
outs in the fifth inning and a double by Fred Lynn scored him. Lynn
was brought in by Cooper to cut down the Texas lead to, 5-4.
Carbo, who had doubled and scored on Lynn's first inning single,
launched a ball in the sixth inning into the left field net for his
14th homer, with Bob Heise and Tim Blackwell on base, to put the Sox
up for the first time, 7 to 5.
After consecutive doubles by Cesar Tovar and Toby Harrah got the
Rangers a run back in the seventh, the Sox added four more runs in
the eighth inning. With one out, Heise got an infield hit.
Blackwell's double moved him to third and Rick Miller was
intentionally walked to load the bases and set up a force play. Mike
Kekich came in to pitch for Texas and gave up a line drive single to
center to Doug Griffin, that scored two runners. Another single to
center by Yastrzemski, scored two more and increased the Sox lead to
11-6.
Harrah's ninth inning homer gave the Rangers their two final runs,
but it was not enough.
Heise had three hits in the game and was 10-for-25 in his last seven
games. Lynn (.341 BA) had two more hits and two more RBIs (67), and
Yaz's two hits put him over .300
Dick Drago drew the starting assignment when Bill Lee checked out of
his start with the flu. Drago was tagged for five runs and five hits
in four innings. Jim Burton replaced Drago in the fifth, worked 2 2/3
innings and picked up his first major league victory. |
