“DIARY OF A WINNER”

CECIL COOPER

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Cecil Cooper helps Luis Tiant win his 12th

July 12, 1975 ... Monsoons and rain delays punctuated a game where Carl Yastrzemski drove in three runs and Jim Rice belted his 14th homer, as the Red Sox won their sixth straight game with a 10 to 4 victory over the Texas Rangers.

The Sox jumped on Ferguson Jenkins for eight runs in less than six innings and enabled Luis Tiant to breeze to his 12th victory. Tiant allowed eight hits and was nicked for two runs in the fourth inning on three singles and an error. He then gave up two runs in the eighth inning, in a rally capped by Mike Hargrove's RBI single.

The Sox jumped out front 2-0 in the first inning on Bernie Carbo's double, a ground out by Carl Yastrzemski that scored Carbo, and a double by Cecil Cooper that scored Yaz. Two more runs were scored in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Denny Doyle and Yaz, and a base hit by Carlton Fisk.

Texas pushed two runs across in the fourth inning and Rice's homer put the Sox up 4-2 in the fifth. The Sox put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning. Jenkins walked Fisk, who was sacrificed to second on Rick Burleson's bunt, and then hit Bob Heise with a pitch. Carbo's single scored Fisk and ended Jenkins' day. Jim Umbarger came in and gave up a two-run double to Doug Griffin and a wild throw to the plate by Toby Harrah, allowed Griffin to get over to third. A fly ball from Yaz scored him with the ninth Sox run.

After the Sox went out in front 10-2 on Rico Petrocelli's RBI single in the seventh inning, Tiant was able to cruise. He did walk the first two batters in eighth that led to Texas' last two runs however.

Cecil Cooper (.354 BA) who is batting .413 over his last 13 games, had two more hits.
