Carlton Fisk's defense got Bill Lee out of a seventh inning
jam and preserved a 5 to 4 win over the Twins in Minnesota. With
Steve Braun on third, Rod Carew decided to surprise everyone when he
decided to drop down a bunt. But Carew pulled back and Fisk fired a
bullet to Rico Petrocelli, who tagged Braun trying to get back to the
third base bag. Additionally, Fisk singled in two runs.
Minnesota starter Dave Goltz actually walked in the winning run, when
he gave a free pass to Cecil Cooper in the fourth inning that forced
a run home.
Meanwhile, Lee weathered two-run Minnesota uprisings in the seventh
and eighth innings to record his 12th win. Rod Carew, however,
grabbed onto one of Lee's errant pitches and sliced it into the left
field bleachers for a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Sox jumped on Goltz in the second inning. He walked Fred Lynn to
start and then Jim Rice lined a triple into left-center. After two
outs, Petrocelli brought in Rice with a base hit and the Sox were up,
2-0.
Then in the third, Denny Doyle singled and Goltz walked Carl
Yastrzemski. Lynn reached on an infield hit and then Goltz let Doyle
score, when he walked Cooper. Fisk followed with a single to center
that scored both Yaz and Lynn, making it 5-0.
Lee, meanwhile was cruising along until Carew's two-run homer in the
sixth. Two more runs by the Twins the next inning, cut the Sox lead
to just one run, 5-4. Lee got the Twins in order in the eighth and
then after giving up a leadoff single in the ninth, ended the game on
three grounders. |
