JIM RICE HOMERS |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The Sox clean up in Minnesota
July 24, 1975
...
The Sox defeated the Twins in the series finale, 6 to
2 and now hold an 8 game lead in the AL East. Jim Rice led a team
that had most of the regulars on the bench, with a tremendous two-run
homer over the center field fence. Rick Wise was the beneficiary,
winning his 13th game and eighth in his last nine starts. He struck
out seven and was aided by three doubleplays.
After that it was down hill for the Twins. Minnesota got one run in
the first inning and then were shutout until the ninth. Rod Carew
(.379 BA) singled home Steve Braun for their first run and was the
one bright spot, batting .421 with nine stolen bases against the Sox
this year.
Rice's homer in the first inning scored Denny Doyle who had walked.
In the third inning after Twins starter Joe Decker walked the first
two Sox batters, Ray Corbin came in. A base hit by Dwight Evans
scored the third Sox run.
Rice's single, Evans' double, a walk to Rick Burleson and a base hit
by Bob Heise, scored two more in the fifth. In the seventh, a walk to
Rick Miller preceded a throwing error by Jerry Terrell and a wild
pitch that scored Miller with the fifth Sox run.
Cecil Cooper pulled a hamstring in the third inning and forced Carl
Yastrzemski to come in and end his day off. It was the Sox 14th
victory in their last 16 games. |
