The Yankees defeated the Red Sox by an 8 to 6 score in
the first game of their series at Shea Stadium. Yank's starter, Rudy
May had an 8-2 lead when the eighth inning started, but the Sox
jumped all over his offerings and they needed help from Tippy
Martinez, who squelched two Sox rallies to nail down the win.
For seven innings, all the Sox hitters except Jim Rice, who had four
hits, really did nothing. Fisk had three hits but ended a fourth
inning rally with a baserunning boner. The Yankees had a 2-0 lead
only to see the Sox tie up the game with a base hit from Rice and a
pair of doubles from Lynn and Fisk. Then Petrocelli hit a liner at
shortstop Jim Mason, who caught Fisk off the bag for a doubleplay to
get out of the jam.
The Yankees added runs in the fourth and the sixth, and three in the
seventh, to go up 8-2. Then in the eighth, Dwight Evans and Jim Rice
hit back-to-back doubles to end May's day. First came Sparky Lyle who
got two quick strikes on Fred Lynn before plunking him with a pitch.
Then he gave up a pair of singles to Fisk and Rico Petrocelli. Doug
Griffin came in with the bases loaded and hit a grounder to
secondbaseman Sandy Alomar, who failed to turn the doubleplay and
allowed another run to score. Bob Montgomery's base hit brought in
the third Sox run of the inning and that ended Lyle's outing.
Martinez came in and issued a free pass to Juan Beniquez that loaded
the bases, before Rick Burleson's fly ball ended the rally. In the
ninth, Martinez gave up two singles but struck out Lynn and
Petrocelli to post his second save and a Yankee win. |
