THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
The
Sox rally to beat the
Yankees
July 26, 1975
...
Reggie Cleveland pitched perfect ball until
the fifth inning and
Jim Rice's fly ball, in the ninth inning, broke a 1-1 tie and
scored Denny Doyle with the go-ahead run for the Sox. Then Carlton
Fisk followed with a two-run single past a drawn-in infield, to give
the Red Sox a 4 to 2 victory over the New York Yankees at Shea
Stadium.
The Yankees got a run back in the bottom of the ninth off Cleveland
and Jim Willoughby was summoned in from the bullpen to nail it down.
The Sox had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Fred Lynn led
off with a triple off the left-centerfield fence and scored on Fisk's
double down the third base line.
Bad baserunning cost the Sox in the third inning. Doyle beat out an
infield hit, stole second and went to third on Pat Dobson's wild
pitch. After Carl Yastrzemski walked, the Sox tried to pull off a
double steal, but Thurman Munson faked a throw to second and then
trapped Doyle in a rundown at third.
The Yankees tied the game in the fifth inning. Munson opened with a
single for the Yanks first hit off Cleveland and moved to third on a
single by Chris Chambliss. After Lou Piniella walked, Rick Burleson
flagged down a shot up the middle and forced him at second while
Munson came sliding in with the tying run ahead of Doyle's bullet to
home.
The win boosted the Sox AL East lead back up to eight games.
Magnificent defense around second base by Doyle and Burleson, as well
as long-running great catches in the outfield by Miller, Yastrzemski
and Rice all contributed heavily to the win. Fisk had two hits, three
RBIs and has now hit in five straight games. |
