Carlton Fisk's 4-for-4 drives home a walk-off
July 28, 1975 ...
Carlton Fisk (4-for-4, 5 RBIs) was a one man demolition crew,
powering the Red Sox to a 7 to 6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at
Fenway Park. His bases loaded single in the ninth inning lifted the
Sox to their 10th consecutive home victory and a nine game lead in
the AL East.
In the first inning, after the Sox loaded the bases on two walks and
hit by Denny Doyle, Jim Rice brought in the first run with a
sacrifice fly. Then Fisk knocked out his first base hit of the game
to bring in the Sox second run.
After the Brewers went ahead, 4-2, on two home runs by Darrell Porter
and Kurt Bevacqua, Fisk tied up the game in the fourth inning with a
two-run homer that cleared the net in left and sailed onto Lansdowne
St.
Another home run and two base hits put the Brewers up again by two in
the sixth inning, and spelled the end of the night for Rick Wise.
Down 6-4 now, Jim Willoughby came in and retired the next two
batters.
The Sox got one of the runs back when Bill Travers, who took over for
starter Pete Broberg, hit Juan Beniquez in the bottom of the sixth.
Juan was brought home on a base hit by Doug Griffin. Into the
seventh, and Fisk came up and lined a solo shot into the screen for
his second homer of the game and tied the score again.
Bottom of the ninth inning and Carl Yastrzemski surprised everyone by
successfully laying down a bunt for a base hit. Fred Lynn drew a free
pass and Rice slammed a shot that bounced off Robin Yount to load the
bases. The infield moved in to cut off a run at the plate and Fisk
slapped his fourth hit of the game through the drawn-in infield, into
left center field, scoring Yaz with the walk-off game winner.
Willoughby held the Brewers hitless for 3 2/3 innings, striking out
four and picking up his first win. |
