THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
A four-run ninth beats the
Brewers
August 6,
1975 ...
Doug Griffin's pinch-hit single drove in the winning run,
during a four-run ninth inning, and Jim Willoughby gave up just two
hits in 5 1/3 innings, to key the Red Sox to a 5 to 2 victory over
the Brewers in Milwaukee.
The Sox trailed 2-1 going into the ninth inning. Cecil Cooper opened
the inning with a double off Tom Murphy, who had replaced Brewers'
starter, Jim Colborn, in the eighth inning. Juan Beniquez ran for
Cooper, took third on a ground out and scored on Rico Petrocelli's
bloop single over shortstop.
Rick Burleson followed with a single, sending Petrocelli to third on
a hit-and-run play, and took second on the throw. Rick Austin
replaced Murphy and walked pinch-hitter Dwight Evans intentionally to
load the bases. Griffin, pinch-hitting for Denny Doyle, then singled
to left, scoring pinch-runner Bob Heise with the winning run. With
two outs, Jim Rice completed the scoring with a two-run single to
right field. Willoughby, who held the Brewers scoreless, after taking
over for Jim Burton in the fourth inning, gained his third victory.
The Brewers scored first in the third inning on Gorman Thomas'
leadoff double and Kurt Bevacqua's single. Their second run
came on George Scott's solo homer, his 23rd of the year, in the
fourth inning.
Doyle, whose 22-game hitting streak was ended in the previous game,
singled to open the fourth inning with the Sox first hit. He was
stranded there at first base however, when Yaz popped up, Rice flied
out and Carlton Fisk grounded to short.
The Sox were held to only two hits by Colburn before scoring a run in
the eighth inning. With one out, Burleson doubled and scored on
Doyle's single to center, cutting the lead to one run. Yastrzemski
then singled Doyle to third. Murphy came in and walked Rice to load
the bases, before finishing the inning by getting Fisk to pop-up. |
