Jim Palmer strikes down the Red Sox
August 5,
1975 ...
Jim Palmer threw a two-hitter at the Red Sox to become the first
16-game winner in the major leagues, with a 3 to 0 victory. He struck
out eight and walked only one batter, giving the Orioles a sweep of
the short two game series.
Palmer outdueled Luis Tiant, who was tagged for nine hits and three
runs in seven innings. The O's picked up a run in the third inning on
Mark Belanger's double and Bobby Grich's base hit. Their second run
came the next inning on singles by Jim Northrup, Don Baylor and
Brooks Robinson. Their last run came in the fifth on Al Bumbry's
double and a throwing error.
Palmer retired the first 12 Sox batters in order, before walking Fred
Lynn, who was erased when Jim Rice hit into a doubleplay. Carlton
Fisk hit Palmer's next pitch off the wall to break up his no-hitter.
Rick Burleson doubled with one out in the ninth for the second Sox
hit. Denny Doyle's hitting streak off 22 games was then snapped when
he flied out to end the game.
Tiant, who had been nursing tendonitis, pitched because Rogelio
Moret, who was scheduled to pitch, was involved in a car accident.
Luis struck out five and didn't issue any free passes, and suffered
his fourth straight loss. Dick Drago pitched the last two innings,
giving up two hits. Tiant had to pitch out of jams in both the fourth
and fifth innings. Then he retired the next six batters in order,
before handing the ball over to Drago.
Rico Petrocelli left the game in the seventh inning with a pull in
his upper left rib cage. |
