...
The Orioles rough up the Sox
August 4,
1975 ...
The Red Sox staked Bill Lee to a 6 to 1 lead, but he couldn't
hold it. The Orioles mauled Lee, Jim Willoughby and Diego Segui for
16 hits and snapped the Sox five game winning streak.
Lee was tagged for nine hits and six runs before being relieved in
the sixth inning by Willoughby. Denny Doyle had a pair of singles to
extend his hitting streak to 22 games.
The Sox had 15 hits including for each by Jim Rice and Rico
Petrocelli (four hits), but were unable to offset the bats of the
Orioles. The O's got three-run homers from Bobby Grich and Brooks
Robinson, a two-run shot from Don Baylor (5-for-5), and a solo homer
by Ken Singleton.
After the Orioles broke the ice, Jim Rice's solo homer in the second
inning tied up the game. Rice followed that up, in the third inning
with a two-run single, that scored Bernie Carbo and Doyle, who had
both reached on base hits. Carlton Fisk followed with a long home run
to give the Sox that 6-1 lead.
Down 12-6 in the eighth, the Sox tried to climb back into the
contest. Petrocelli and Burleson hit singles off starter, Doyle
Alexander, sending him out of the game. Grant Jackson walked Dwight
Evans to load the bases. Doug Griffin, pinch hitting for Doyle, drove
a two-run single to left, but Yaz lined right to firstbaseman Lee
May, who made the catch and stepped on the bag to double-up Griffin.
Dyar Miller came in and struck out Rice to end the rally. A 1-2-3
ninth inning gave Baltimore a 12 to 8 win. |
