CECIL COOPER |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Cecil Cooper keeps the Sox rolling along
August 3, 1975 ...
Denny Doyle extended his hitting streak to 21 games, the
longest in the major leagues this season, with a first inning home
run, while Cecil Cooper launched a solo homer to break a 4-4 tie that
powered the Sox to a 6 to 4 win over the Tigers and a five-game
series sweep.
Doyle lined his third homer of the year into the right field stands
after Bernie Carbo had doubled off Joe Coleman. The Sox increased
their lead to 3-0 on a walk and Fred Lynn's double in the third
inning.
Aurelio Rodriguez slammed a homer into the net, with Ben Oglivie
aboard, in the fourth, to bring the Tigers back to a one run deficit,
3-2. Then Rick Burleson belted his fifth home of the year, in the
seventh, to put the Sox back up by two. Oglivie's two-run single in
the eighth tied up the game at four apiece.
Cooper jumped on the first pitch by Tom Walker to start the eighth,
and sent the ball into the Sox bullpen to break the tie. It was his
eighth of the season and the 100th for the Sox team. Doyle added an
insurance run by knocking in Burleson, who had walked after Cooper's
homer.
Reggie Cleveland was replaced by Jim Willoughby in the ninth after
Rodriguez started the inning with a base hit. Willoughby got two
grounders and around the strikeout of Leon Roberts, to end the game.
Cooper had a double and a single to go along with his homer. As the
DH, he is batting .408 with 31 hits. The Sox (66-42) are at 24 games
over .500, and have posted their best record since they were 25 games
over 1951. |
