THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Three homers beat the Athletics
August 9,
1975 ...
The Red Sox knocked out A's starter, Sonny Siebert in less
than three innings, as Denny Doyle, Cecil Cooper and Carlton
Fisk homered and paced an 11-hit Red Sox attack over the Athletics, 7
to 2 in Oakland. Bill Lee gave up five hits, in earning his 15th
victory.
Lee gave up a homer to Sal Bando in the seventh and gave the ball
over to Dick Drago for the last two innings. Lee has now won 11 of
his last 13 games and is 9-2 on the road.
Fisk put the Sox up 1-0 in the second inning, with a hard single to
right, scoring Fred Lynn who had beat out a bunt and stolen second.
Doyle and Cooper slammed consecutive homers off Siebert in the third
inning, after Rick Burleson had drilled a single to left, followed by
a double that scored him by Bernie Carbo.
Doyle's homer was his fourth since joining the Sox. He only has had
ten home runs total in the past five seasons. Cooper, who has fully
recovered from a hamstring pull, slammed his shot into the bleachers
over the head of Reggie Jackson.
The Sox, up 5-0, scored again in the fifth inning. A base hit by
Cooper to start the inning, was followed by a long homer by Fisk off
Glen Abbott. Bando's seventh inning homer over the left field fence,
with Joe Rudi aboard, cut the Sox lead to 7-2. |
