Cecil Cooper and Jim Rice
power the Sox by the A's
August 10,
1975 ...
Cecil Cooper and Jim Rice hit two home runs, as the Sox beat
the Oakland A's, 5 to 3. Cooper's homer was his 10th of the year and
Rice connected for his 19th.
Cooper's smash, his second in two games, came in the first inning,
scoring Bernie Carbo ahead of him, who had led off the game with a
base hit. In the fourth inning, Rice broke a 0-for-13 slump, when he
unloaded off Dick Bosman, who had walked Cooper to start the inning.
Down 4-0, Gene Tenace's 18th homer, with Joe Rudi on base, cut the
Sox lead in half.
The Sox final run came in the ninth inning when Dwight Evans doubled,
was sacrificed to third, and scored on Doug Griffin's single off
Rollie Fingers.
Luis Tiant snapped a three-game losing streak to gain his 14th win.
He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning, before
Tenace's homer in the fourth. Luis got out of another jam in the
sixth when, with a runner on first, Billy Williams drove one of his
pitches over the right field fence, but foul by a few inches.
After Sal Bando and Phi Garner drove Fred Lynn up against the fence
to haul down the long flies in the seventh, Jim Burton replaced
Tiant. Burton got in trouble in the ninth. Down 5-2, Reggie Jackson
blooped a double to shallow left and Billy North fisted a ball over
Rick Burleson's outstretched glove. With runs on first and
third, Jim Willoughby came in and gave up a long fly ball to Tenace,
that scored Jackson, 5-3. Bando then backed Rice up to the fence for
the final out of the game. |
