THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Yaz and Doyle team up against
the Angels
August 12,
1975 ...
Denny Doyle and Carl Yastrzemski came back into the Sox
lineup and initiated two early rallies, while Rick Wise kept up his
remarkable pitching, winning his ninth straight and 16th game of the
season with an 8 to 2 win over the Angels in Anaheim.
Doyle and Yaz teamed up to begin a two-run first inning and a
three-run third inning. Carlton Fisk had three hits and three RBIs,
and Cecil Cooper had a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Chuck Hockenbery was the Angels' starter and the Sox got to him,
putting five runs on the scoreboard. After Denny Doyle started the
game with a single, Yastrzemski blooped a hit to left and Jim Rice
drew a free pass. With the bases loaded, Carlton Fisk hit a chopper
over the mound that scored Doyle and Yaz.
The third inning was Hockenbery's last. Doyle started it again with a
chopper, that thirdbaseman Dave Chalk couldn't find the handle on,
and scored on a double by Yaz. Rice singled Yaz home and Fisk walked.
Andy Hassler took over for the Angels and Cecil Cooper greeted him by
slicing a single to left, that scored Rice.
Finally for the Angels, down 5-0, they got to Wise in the fifth. With
two outs, Ike Hampton reached on a base hit and made it over to third
base when Fisk tried to pick him off first and threw the ball into
right field. After Wise walked Morris Nettles and Jerry Remy, Mickey
Rivers slapped a single to left, bringing in two runs.
Other than that lapse, Wise threw hard and was very consistent
through the first six innings. The Angels had runners on base in each
inning, but Wise worked out of the jams each time. |
