The sloppy Sox lose to the Angels

August 13, 1975 ... Bruce Bochte doubled and singled to help the Angels beat the Red Sox, 8 to 3. Ed Figueroa took his 11th win against eight losses. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

A six-run third inning spelled the end for the Sox early in the game. There was an infield hit, a throw that drew Cecil Cooper off the first base bag, a wild pitch for a run, three different types of errors, and a 140 foot hit that went for a double. When the inning was over all Reggie Cleveland could do was just shake his head.

The Sox came into the third leading 2 to 1. They scored the first run of the game in the very first inning, on a base hit by Denny Doyle and a double to left-center by Fred Lynn. Their second run came an inning later on singles by Carlton Fisk and Cooper, followed by a double play grounder by Rick Burleson, that allowed Fisk to come across.

A pair of doubles got one of the runs back for the Angels in the second inning. Then in the third inning Morris Nettles beat out an infield single off Bob Heise's glove at third. With Nettles breaking on the pitch, Jerry Remy bounced a ball over the mound. Doyle tried unsuccessfully to tag out Nettles at second, then threw to first. The throw appeared to get there in time, but first base umpire Jim McKean, called Remy safe.

After some squabbling, Mickey Rivers tied the game up with a double and put runners on second and third. Cleveland then bounced a breaking ball that got by Fisk and Adrian Garrett bounced one past the drawn-in infield. A single by Dave Collins sent Cleveland packing in favor of Jim Burton. Two hits, a walk and an error later saw the Angels up 7-2.

In the sixth the Angels added another run with Remy on third and Rivers on first. Rivers broke for second and Fisk tried to cut him down, but his throw sailed into center field and Remy scored.
