JERRY REMY |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Jerry Remy leads the Angels past the Sox
August 14,
1975 ...
The Angels raked Bill Lee for 11 hits and did all their
damage in the third inning, when Jerry Remy belted a two-run double
and Lee Stanton added a two-run single, as California beat the
Sox, 5 to 3 in Anaheim.
The Sox left 11 runners on base but Fred Lynn drove in two runs,
pushing his league-leading RBI total to 85. The Sox had the bases
loaded with one out in the first inning, the bases loaded with two
outs in the fifth, and on first and second, with one out in the
seventh.
In the first inning, Denny Doyle and Carl Yastrzemski both got on
base with singles. Lynn brought in Doyle with a base hit while Yaz
scooted over to third. Angels starter, Bill Singer hit Jim Rice in
the forearm with a pitch to load the bases and got Carlton Fisk on a
pop-up and Rick Miller on a groundout.
Rice had to come out of the game and was taken to the hospital. He
had a cast put on his arm after the x-rays came back negative. The
Angels then scored five runs in the third inning off Lee, on five
singles, a walk and Remy's double.
The Sox got one run back in the fifth. Rick Burleson led off with a
single to left, and then Remy made two consecutive great plays on
ground balls hit by Cecil Cooper and Doyle. Singer walked Yaz and
gave up another RBI single to Lynn. Juan Beniquez next got on
base with an infield hit and Fisk drove Mickey Rivers back to the
track, where he hauled down his long drive for the final out.
As Singer began to tire the Sox chipped away. In the seventh inning
Doyle sliced a double down the left field line, Yaz walked and Doyle
got to third on Lynn's fly to center. Beniquez came up and lined a
ball that got by Stanton and scored Doyle, making the score 5-3.
Rookie Don Kirkwood took over for Singer and once again Fisk and
Miller left the ducks on the pond. |
