THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Cooper pushes the Red Sox past
Chicago
August 15,
1975 ...
Behind the pitching of Luis Tiant and the batting of
Cecil Cooper, the Red Sox slipped by the White Sox, 3 to 2, in
Chicago.
Tiant threw a neat seven-hitter for his 15th victory and his 14th
complete game. He allowed only three hits over the last six innings,
aided by doubleplays in the fourth and fifth innings. Meanwhile,
Cooper (.338 BA), who is 15-for-40, paced the offense, smashing out
three hits, including a triple and his fifth homer of the year.
Cooper's triple started the second inning and resulted in the first
run when he scored on Rico Petrocelli's sacrifice fly to right. After
the White Sox tied up the game in the third inning, Cooper's homer in
the fourth put the Sox back on top, 2-1.
El Tiante escaped trouble a number of times. had runners on first and
third in the first inning, but struck out Deron Johnson and got Ken
Henderson himself on a ball hit back to him. In the third inning Pat
Kelly sliced a ball into left, that Juan Beniquez misplayed into a
triple. Jorge Orta singled him in and Carlos May drilled a ball that
short-hopped the right field fence. Miller grabbed the ricochet,
fired to Denny Doyle, who let the ball bounce off him toward Yaz.
Orta, who had held up a third saw this and broke for home, only to be
cut down by Yaz. Tiant then got out of it by striking out Johnson
again.
The winning run was counted in the sixth inning. Fred Lynn drew a
pass from Chicago starter, Jesse Jefferson, and took second on an
infield out, scoring on Rick Miller's single up the middle. Finally,
after Henderson slammed a two-out RBI double in the sixth, to make
the score 3-2, Tiant got Bill Melton to ground out easily. Tiant
cruised the rest of the way allowing just one hit. |
