Rogelio Moret shuts out the
White Sox
August 16,
1975 ...
Rogelio Moret dazzled the Chicago White Sox with a
two-hit shutout, 5 to 0, that saw only one Chicago baserunner reach
second base, and that was on an error. Meanwhile, Carlton Fisk and
Dwight Evans pounded Wilbur Wood's knuckleball easily.
After one-hitting Chicago back at Fenway, today Moret mixed his heat
with a good consistent breaking ball and pinpoint accuracy. He had
some defensive help from Bob Heise. The thirdbaseman made two
excellent plays off the carpet.
Jim Willoughby had to finish for Moret, who banged his head on the
dugout roof by accident in the seventh inning. It was Willoughby's
15th appearance since coming over to the Sox, and his 8th save, to go
along with three wins.
Carlton Fisk tripled in a run in the first inning, singled and just
missed a homer. He also threw out Pat Kelly trying to steal second.
Dwight Evans, forced into action with his bad hip, because of Jim
Rice's injured arm, drilled his 10th homer in the sixth inning, for
the Sox second run, and tripled in the ninth.
In that ninth inning, the Sox scored three runs. Up 2-0, Fisk singled
and stole second. He was brought in on Fred Lynn's base hit, who took
second on the throw to the plate and then stole third base. He scored
when Evans drove a ball high off the right field fence and Cooper
(.342 BA) brought Dewey in for the final run with another base hit. |
