THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Sox
split the doubleheader in
Chicago
August 17, 1975
...
Denny Doyle's two-out single in the 11th inning off Rich
Gossage and lifted the Red Sox to a 4 to 3 victory over the White
Sox, giving them a split of the day's doubleheader.
Jorge Orta's two-run single in a three-run second inning carried the
White Sox to a 6 to 2 victory in the opener.
Rich Gossage who had earned his 18th save in the first game, came
into the second game in the eighth inning and had matched shutout
innings until the 11th, with Jim Willoughby, who won the second game
Rick Burleson's single in the second inning of the nitecap, scored
Cecil Cooper with the Red Sox first run off Jim Kaat. Doug Griffin's
sacrifice bunt scored Juan Beniquez with the second run, when Carlos
May threw the ball away attempting to get Beniquez at third base.
Reggie Cleveland held Chicago hitless until the fourth inning, when
they scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Then Dwight Evans tied the
game in the sixth inning with his 11th homer of the season into the
upper deck. Gossage breezed into the 11th inning, then with two outs,
Rick Burleson singled to center, Fred Lynn walked on four straight
balls and Doyle delivered his game-wining hit to right. Willoughby
finished the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning.
In the first game, the Red Sox took the lead in the second inning on
Carlton Fisk's double and Dwight Evans' single. But in the bottom of
the inning, the White Sox loaded the bases on Rick Wise, who was
wild, walking eight batters. Bucky Dent's sacrifice fly tied
the game before Orta singled to center, for a 3-1 lead. Chicago added
runs in the sixth on a Deron Johnson's double, in the seventh on Pat
Kelly's single and in the eighth on Ken Henderson's single.
Jim Rice was back in the lineup and leapt over a nine foot fence to
rob Johnson of a homer in the second game. Cecil Cooper and Carlton
Fisk each had three hits and Dwight Evans had five hits and three
RBIs in the two games. It was the third time this year the Red Sox
have beaten Gossage. |
