DENNIS LEONARD |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Dennis Leonard halts the Sox
August 20,
1975 ...
Dennis Leonard allowed six hits and John Mayberry cracked out
three hits, to spark the Kansas City Royals to a 3 to 1 victory over
the Red Sox. Leonard worked out of trouble in the first inning and
survived a one-run third inning to beat the Sox for the second time
this season. He struck out seven batters while Luis Tiant
failed to strikeout anybody, while giving up nine hits.
The Red Sox scored in the third inning on Cecil Cooper's double and
Denny Doyle's single. The Sox got to Leonard for three of their four
hits in the first three innings. Cooper accounted for three of them
with a single, double and a triple.
Kansas City scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, when John
Mayberry stroked the first of his two doubles and scored on George
Brett's single. Then after a walk to Tony Solaita, Al Cowens smashed
a double to left-center that scored Brett. The Royals extended their
lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning. Amos Otis slashed a two-out triple
and came home on Mayberry's second double.
The Sox last chance to get to Leonard came in the eighth inning.
Cooper opened up the inning with a triple to dead center. But Leonard
got Doyle, Yastrzemski and Lynn in order and left Cooper stranded
there. |
