THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Bill Lee pitches another fine game
August 24, 1975 ...
After an hour and 46 minute rain delay, home runs by
Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice backed the clutch pitching of Bill Lee,
as the Red Sox slogged past the White Sox, 6 to 1.
Yaz drilled his 13th homer around the Pesky Pole in the first inning,
to give the Red Sox the lead. They scored two more times in the fifth
inning after Chicago had tied the game, when they scored an unearned
run on two hits and a throwing error by Bob Montgomery.
Fred Lynn led off the fifth inning with a bloop double to left and
went to third on Dwight Evans' base hit. Rick Burleson's fly ball to
Bob Coluccio scored Lynn and sent Evans to second. Singles by
Montgomery and then Bob Heise scored Evans to put the Red Sox up 3-1.
Rice smashed his 20th homer onto Lansdowne Street off Wilbur Wood in
the sixth inning. Two more runs were scored in the seventh on a
double by Bob Heise, a single by Juan Beniquez, a pinch single by
Denny Doyle off Cecil Upshaw, and a run-scoring grounder by Yaz.
Lee pitched a complete game in and out of the raindrops and picked up
his 17th win, by pitching out of trouble several times. The White Sox
got the first two runners on in the sixth inning but Lee struck out
Bill Melton and got Bill Stein to hit into a doubleplay. A walk and a
one-out single put two more runners on base for Chicago in the
eighth, but Lee got two fly balls to get out of it. |
