“DIARY OF A WINNER”

REGGIE JACKSON

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Reggie Jackson's 5 RBIs
pushes the As past the Sox

August 31, 1975 ... Reggie Jackson drove in five runs, two of them on a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning, to lead the Oakland Athletics past the Red Sox, 8 to 6. Diego Segui walked the bases loaded in the ninth before Jackson stroked his two-out tie breaking single to center. Jackson also had a bases-loaded double to drive in two runs, and a run scoring single. Rollie Fingers put a period on the end of the game and got the victory for the second consecutive day.

Oakland took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Jackson's double that scored Claudell Washington and Billy North with the bases loaded. The Sox got three runs in their half of the third inning. With two outs Fred Lynn doubled and came in on Jim Rice's base hit. A's starter Sonny Siebert walked Dwight Evans and Rick Burleson brought Rice and Evans home with a double, putting the Sox ahead, 3-2.

Bill Lee gave up three consecutive singles to start the fifth inning. Jackson's single scored Washington and Bando to tie the game. Harper's single scored Bando with the go-ahead run, 4-3.

Rice's hit then re-tied the game in the Sox half of the fifth inning, scoring Carl Yastrzemski who had walked and was moved along by a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error. Glenn Abbott came into the game to pitch for Oakland and gave up a scratch hit to Dwight Evans and then a two-run double to Burleson, putting the Sox up 6-4.

Jim Willoughby threw a wild pitch in the sixth that let Ted Martinez score the next run for the A's in the sixth. Then Tommy Harper hit a homer to tie the game once again in the seventh, 6-6.

The Sox had a chance to win game in the eighth when Abbott gave up a hit to Tim Blackwell who moved to second on a bunt. Dick Bosman then came in and hit Doug Griffin on the head who was taken to the hospital for x-rays, which were negative. With runners on first and second, Rollie Fingers was summoned and got Yaz and Lynn to end the threat.

In bottom of the ninth, with the A's now ahead, 8-6, on Jackson's 2-RBI single, Fingers gave up a two-out single to Burleson, but struckout Bernie Carbo to end the game.

Harper had three hits in the game, including his fourth home run of the season that tied the score in the seventh inning. Rick Burleson had four hits for the Red Sox, including a pair of doubles, and drove in four runs.
