THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Bando leads the A's past the Sox in the 10th
August 30,
1975 ...
Claudell Washington singled with two outs in the 10th inning,
stole second and came home on Sal Bando's base hit to beat the Red
Sox, 7 to 6 in the rain, wind and cold. It was the A's first win in
the five games they've played with the Sox this year. The
loser was Dick Drago, who shut out the A's on three hits after taking
over for Luis Tiant in the third inning.
The score had been tied at 6-6 since the fourth inning when Carl
Yastrzemski tripled and scored on Fred Lynn's single though a
drawn-in infield. Yaz also belted his 14th homer of the year, scoring
three runs and driving in two.
Reggie Jackson put the A's up in the first inning by belting a solo
homer, his 29th. But the Sox came right back to score three runs in
their half of the first. Starter Glenn Abbott gave up a double to
Cecil Cooper, who scored when Denny Doyle's grounder was booted by
A's secondbaseman, Phil Garner. Yaz walked and Fred Lynn lined a base
hit that scored Doyle. Yaz took third when Washington's throw went
wild. Jim Rice grounded into a 6-4-3 doubleplay but scored Yaz and
put the Sox up 3-2.
Tiant started the next inning by walking Gene Tenace, giving up a
single to Teddy Martinez, a double to Bill North and a single to
Washington and Oakland was back out front, 5-3. Yaz's home run with
Cooper on board, tied up the game again in the Sox half of the second
inning.
But Tiant got wild and couldn't hold the lead. This time he let
Oakland get two runners aboard with free passes and a run scoring
single by Garner. Lynn tied the game again at 6-6, in the sixth, by
knocking in Yaz after his triple.
In the ninth inning Rollie Fingers came in and struck out Yaz, who
never took the bat off his shoulder to start and then Lynn, who had
three hits and two RBIs previously. Fingers gave up a hit to Jim Rice
but then punched out Bernie Carbo. |
