CECIL COOPER |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Cooper's four hits give Wise his 17th win
August 29, 1975 ...
The Sox glided to a 6 to 1 victory over the AL West
leaders, the Oakland Athletics, behind Rick Wise's fastballs and the
hitting of Cecil Cooper. Wise scattered eight hits and walked just
one, and breezed to his 17th win.
Cooper (.340 BA) homered, doubled twice and singled and might have
hit for the cycle had he not tripped going over second base in the
eighth inning. He led the game off in the first inning by taking a
Stan Bahnsen pitch high off the centerfield fence for a double. He
took third on Denny Doyle's sacrifice and scored on a passed ball by
Gene Tenace.
The Sox added another run in the second inning on walks to Jim Rice
and Dwight Evans, an error on Rick Burleson's sacrifice bunt that got
by Sal Bando, followed by a doubleplay grounder by Dick McAuliffe,
that allowed Rice to score the second Sox run.
Cooper led off the third inning by slugging his 12th homer into the
right field stands and then the fourth run of the game reached home
on a bad throw to first on Doyle's grounder by Phil Garner, a walk to
Carl Yastrzemski and a base hit by Jim Rice.
The A's spoiled Wise's shutout in the fourth on a single by Sal Bando
and a double by Billy Williams. But the Sox added two more runs in
the fifth inning. Ahead 4-1, with two outs, reliever Paul Lindblad
gave up a double to Doyle and walked Rice to force a potential
doubleplay. Instead, Dwight Evans and Rick Burleson each knocked out
a base hit to score two more runs. |
