“DIARY OF A WINNER”

DOUG GRIFFIN

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Rico Petrocelli & Doug Griffin are key in a Sox split

September 13, 1975 ... Rico Petrocelli and Doug Griffin broke out of batting slumps in a three-run fourth inning and the Red Sox went on to beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 6 to 3 for a doubleheader split. The Brewers won the first half of the twin bill by a 9 to 6 score with a six-run fourth inning, triggered by George Scott's 29th home run.

In the first game the Brewers clobbered Rick Wise and reliever Dick Drago. Scott had two of the Brewers' 10 hits in the game. Scott's homer was a smash off the center field back wall that tied up the game at 2-2. Down 1-0, Sox had scored two runs in the second inning on Jim Rice's double, his first of three hits, Carlton Fisk's triple and a sacrifice fly from Petrocelli. Then it all caved in on the Sox. The Brewers took advantage of two errors by Rick Burleson and two wild pitches and sent ten men to the plate in the fourth inning.

Pete Broberg became the first pitcher to beat the Red Sox four times. Twice he blew third strikes past Carlton Fisk with men in scoring position.

The Red Sox took revenge on Bill Travers in the second game. In the first inning the Sox nicked him for a run. A single by Dwight Evans, a walk, and a single by Fred Lynn, put up the Sox first run of the game.

With one out in the fourth inning, Carlton Fisk grounded a single into left field. Petrocelli, with just two hits in his last 27 at bats promptly scored Fisk with a double high off the left field wall. Bob Montgomery followed him with a triple off the centerfield wall, scoring Fisk. Doug Griffin, who was also 2-for-27, then lined a single to left, bringing home Monty, putting the Sox up 4-2. Montgomery gave the Sox another run with his second homer of the year.

The Brewers had scored their two runs on Robin Yount's double off the wall, with a man aboard, in the second inning and Bill Sharp's sacrifice fly, that scored Pedro Garcia, who had doubled in the third inning.

Montgomery had two hits in the game, while Jim Burton did a great job in relief of Reggie Cleveland, who went 7 1/3 innings to pick up his 12th victory.
