LYNN THROWS OUT PORTER AT HOME |
THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Fred
Lynn's arm and
his four hits, pulls the Sox out
September 14, 1975 ...
Fred Lynn had four hits, including a home run, good
for two RBIs and scored twice. He also saved a run to end the fourth
inning, when he caught Kurt Bevacqua's fly ball and threw Darrell
Porter out at home, trying to score from third. But
Carl Yastrzemski
provided the drama with a two-run tie-breaking single, in a three-run
seventh inning, that allowed the Sox to beat the Brewers 8 to 6.
Lynn's 21st homer put the Sox ahead in the second inning but the
Brewers took the lead on a two-run triple by Bobby Mitchell in the
fourth inning off Bill Lee. Mitchell later scored on a doubleplay
ball. Hank Aaron's 12th homer in the fifth inning, his first ever at
Fenway Park, preceded a walk and Mike Hegan's double, making the
score 5-1, in favor of Milwaukee.
The Sox bounced back to knot the score with four runs in the sixth
inning, two on Rico Petrocelli's double. Cooper started the inning
with a double off the center field wall, and Yaz followed with a base
hit to right. Lynn's single and scored Cooper. A walk to Jim Rice
loaded the bases by the starter Jim Slaton. Dwight Evans next greeted
Tom Murphy with a sacrifice fly to left-center, allowing Yaz to
sprint home. Petrocelli's (3-for-31) double came next tying the
score.
A walk to Rick
Burleson and successive bunt singles by Cecil Cooper and Denny Doyle
off Rick Austin, set the stage for Yaz's single up the middle that
broke the 5-5 tie. Lynn's single then scored Doyle to put the Sox on
top, 8-5.
Don Money's double that scored Darrell Porter, accounted for the
Brewers' sixth run. The Brewers threatened in the ninth when Aaron
singled and Darwin doubled with one out. But Dick Drago got Porter to
fly out and struck out Hegan to end the game. |
