“DIARY OF A WINNER”

THE "GOLD DUST TWINS" AND
A SEASON TO REMEMBER
...
Luis Tiant all but sends
the Orioles packing

September 16, 1975 ... In a must-win series for the Baltimore Orioles, Luis Tiant outdueled Jim Palmer, blanking the O's, 2 to 0. Rico Petrocelli and Carlton Fisk belted solo homers for the only runs the Sox needed.

Petrocelli broke up the scoreless game by leading off the third inning with his seventh homer of the season into the screen in left-center. Fisk made the score 2-0 in the fourth inning, with his 10th homer. It was only the 19th homer given up by Palmer in some 300 innings pitched this year.

Tiant gave up five scattered hits to earn his 17th victory, striking out eight and walking just one. He permitted just one runner to get to third base in this, his 36th career shutout. The only serious threat by Baltimore came in the fourth inning. With two men on and nobody out, Tiant struck out Lee May, got Ken Singleton on a weak grounder and Don Baylor on a ground ball to Burleson.

Baltimore's hopes all but died as the Sox lead now became 5 1/2 games over them with 11 to go.
