The Sox come-from-behind
with an 8-run inning
May 15, 1976
...
A seventh inning explosion began with a Carlton Fisk double
and ended with a Fisk homer. In between, men named Rico Petrocelli,
Fred Lynn and Jim Rice marched off the bench and could do no wrong,
carrying the Red Sox to their fourth straight win, 9 to 4, over the
Brewers.
Ferguson Jenkins went the distance and won his second game in seven
decisions, striking out a team season high, nine batters, while
yielding eight hits.
The Sox managed three hits off Brewers' starter Jim Colburn. They
marched into the bottom of the eight losing 3 to 1. The Brewers
scored first in the third inning on George Scott's double off the
wall that scored Pedro Garcia, who had led-off the inning with a base
hit. The Sox tied up the game in their half of the third inning. With
two outs, Rick Burleson singled and scored on Rick Miller's double.
In the fifth inning the Brewers went ahead, 3 to 1, on home runs by
Garcia and Scott. After Fisk's double to start the seventh inning,
Bernie Carbo singled to right. Eduardo Rodriguez was brought in to
relieve Colburn and walked Dwight Evans to load the bases. Petrocelli
hit for Steve Dillard and drew another walk to bring in Fisk. Fred
Lynn hit for Doug Griffin and lifted a sacrifice fly to right that
allowed Carbo to score. Burleson's single scored Evans and sent
Petrocelli to third.
Ray Sadecki took over from Rodriguez and faced Rice, who was batting
for Miller and slammed a home run into the net, scoring Petrocelli
and Burleson before him. After a pop-up by Cooper and a walk to
Yastrzemski, To Murphy was given the ball. Fisk greeted him with
another homer that also scored Yaz and gave the Sox eight runs and a
7 to 3 lead.
Gorman Thomas' double to center scored Darrell Porter for the final
run, giving the Sox a 9 to 4 victory. |
