Rick Burleson's two-out ninth inning single drove home Doug
Griffin with the winning run and gave the Red Sox a 4 to 3 win over
the California Angels behind the five hit pitching of Ferguson
Jenkins.
Burleson, who slugged a solo homer in the fifth inning for the Sox'
third run delivered his walk-off hit after Griffin walked and went to
second on a passed ball.
Cecil Cooper had helped the Sox take a 2-0 lead with a two-run base
hit in the fourth, that brought in Jim Rice who had singled and
Carlton Fisk who had doubled before him. Burleson's homer made the
score 3-0.
The Angels scored their first run in the eight inning on Ron
Jackson's home run, making the score 3-1. They tied the game with two
out in the top of the ninth when Tommy Davis hit a two-run homer, his
first of the season. It came after Cooper's throw got by Jenkins,
covering first on a grounder by Bob Jones.
Jenkins out-dueled Frank Tanana and struck-out five batters. |
