...
Carlton Fisk delivered a two-out 10th inning walk-off single
to lead the Red Sox to a 3 to 2 victory over the Twins and a sweep of
their four game series.
The Sox had gotten the first run of the game off Dave Goltz in the
fourth inning, when Carl Yastrzemski led off with a double, moved to
third on an infield ground out, and scored on Fred Lynn's sacrifice
fly.
The Twins tied the game in the eight inning against Luis Tiant,
who allowed just four hits. But he gave up a base hit to Rob Wilfong,
who eventually scored on Dan Ford's infield out after a pair of
sacrifice bunts. The Twins then took the the lead in the top of the
10th off Bill Campbell, who walked two men and gave up an RBI single
to Jose Morales.
So, trailing 2-1
going into the bottom of the 10th inning, Gary Hancock led off with a
base hit off Goltz. He moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on
Jim Rice's two-out, broken-bat single into left off reliever Mike
Marshall. After Yaz singled Rice over to third, Fisk drove one off
the center field wall to score Rice with the game winner. |
