Butch Hobson belted his 20th home run of the season off
reliever Mike Marshall, with two outs in the 8th inning, lifting the
Red Sox to a 6-5 comeback victory over the Minnesota Twins, behind
the relief pitching of Tom Burgmeier and Dick Drago.
Hobson connected off Marshall, following a four run seventh inning
capped off by Fred Lynn's two-run homer off Minnesota starter Dave
Goltz, that tied the score at 5 to 5.
Burgmeier had replaced Sox starter, Bob Stanley with one out in the
first inning. Burgmeier then allowed two run-scoring singles before
settling down and blanking the Twins on just two hits before giving
way to Dick Drago in the ninth inning. Burgmeier earned his third
victory in four decisions, with his longest outing for the Sox in two
years. Drago then earned his eighth save.
The Twins had taken a 5-0 lead in the first inning before the Red Sox
battled back to tie the score. Jim Rice knocked out his 31st homer in
the fourth inning before the four-run Sox seventh. With one out, Jack
Brohamer singled to right. Dwight Evans' double off the wall sent
Brohamer over to third. Rick Burleson lined one up the middle to
score both Brohamer and Evans, before scoring ahead of Lynn's homer.
Then in the eighth after Yaz had flown out and Bob Watson struck out,
Hobson took a pitch over the wall to put the Sox ahead for good. |
