Dwight Evans' walk-off HR wins for the Sox

July 4, 1979 ... Dwight Evans' 100th career home run, a 2-run homer off reliever Al Hrabosky, with two outs in the ninth inning, powered the Red Sox to a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Hrabosky (6-4), who replaced starter, Dennis Leonard at the start of the ninth inning, retired the first two batters he faced, before Butch Hobson singled to left. Then Evans belted a tremendous into the screen in left field for the walk-off win.

Mike Torrez, who pitched out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the ninth inning, collected his ninth win of the season, despite four singles given up to Willie Wilson.

The Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Rick Burleson, a fielder's choice grounder by Jack Brohamer, a walk to Fred Lynn, and Jim Rice's RBI single that scored Brohamer. An infield out by Carlton Fisk scored Lynn with the second run.

The Royals the tied the score in the third inning. Frank White struck out, but reached first when the third strike got past Bob Montgomery. Fred Patek's single to right got White to third base and he scored on Wilson's single. Patek then scored on a ground out by George Brett.

The Royals went out in front 4-2 in the fifth inning on singles by Wilson and Brett, a walk and an error by Rick Burleson. The Sox got one of those runs back in their half of the fifth on a double by Evans and a pair of infield groundouts.

Fred Lynn led off the sixth inning by belting his 22nd homer of the year into the right field bleachers, to tie the score at 4-4.
