The Red Sox unloaded a 14-hit attack, including homers by six
different players, and rolled to a 13 to 3 victory over the Detroit
Tigers behind Mike Torrez. Torrez settled down after giving up
three runs in the first inning. He finished with a seven-hitter in
improving his record to 7-4.
Fred Lynn, Carl Yastrzemski, Bob Watson, Dwight Evans, Butch Hobson
and Jim Dwyer each contributed to the Sox single game high for home
runs this season. The Sox also banged out five doubles in the assault
on four different Detroit pitchers.
The Sox went ahead to stay with four runs in the third inning. Hobson
led off with a double and with two outs, Lynn slammed his 17th homer.
Jim Rice then walked and Yaz lined his 12th homer of the season and
395th of his career, into the center field bleachers.
Bob Watson, acquired from the Astros last week, hit his first homer
for the Sox, to lead off the sixth inning. Evans immediately followed
with his ninth homer, marking the fourth time the Sox have homered
back-to-back this year. Hobson, who walked and singled in his other
times to the plate, lined a three-run homer, his ninth, in the
seventh inning. Jim Dwyer, who went in for Yaz in the top of the
eighth, hit his first homer into the Tigers' bullpen with two outs in
bottom of the eight inning. |
