Jerry Remy brings Evans home in the 10th
May 15, 1979
...
Dwight Evans stole second and raced home on Jerry Remy's
single in the 10th inning, to give the Red Sox a 3 to 2 walk-off
victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
The Orioles got an unearned run off Dennis Eckersley in the second
inning after Lee May doubled and Billy Smith walked. They then pulled
a double steal and May came home when catcher Gary Allenson threw the
ball into center field.
Jim Palmer pitched no-hit ball for 4 2/3 innings, giving up only a
walk to Carl Yastrzemski in the second inning. The Sox then scored
twice in the fifth inning on a two-out double by Butch Hobson and RBI
singles by George Scott and Evans. Rick Dempsey's first home run of
the season in the seventh inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Don Stanhouse replaced Jim Palmer at the start of the ninth, walked
Evans to open the 10th. One out later, Evans swiped second and came
home on Remy's single to left. Evans banged into Dempsey, the
catcher, but John Lowenstein's throw was up the first base line.
The Orioles had threatened in the top of the tenth inning, as Al
Bumbry singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on Bob
Montgomery's wild throw. But Eckersley struck out pinch hitter Pat
Kelly and got Larry Harlow to pop out.
Eckersley gave up eight hits but only one earned run in his 10
innings of work. Palmer pitched eight innings, allowing six hits and
two runs. |
