Yaz's slams a ninth inning walk-off homer
May 9, 1979
...
Carl Yastrzemski's sixth home run of the season, a two-run
shot with one out in the ninth inning, vaulted the Red Sox to a 9 to
8 victory over the California Angels.
Fred Lynn, who had driven in five runs with his 12th and 13th homers
of the year, led off the ninth by striking out. But Dave LaRoche
walked Jim Rice before Yaz unloaded his homer into the right field
seats.
Lynn, the major league home run leader, hit his first homer of the
night, a two-run shot to right in the sixth inning, off Angels
starter, David Frost. It tied the game at 4 to 4. And with the Angels
leading by a run in the bottom of the seventh, Lynn blasted his
second homer of the game, good for 3 RBIs into the center field
bleachers, putting the Sox on top, 7 to 5.
California got one of the runs back on a single by Bert Campaneris
and Rick Miller's double. And then the Angels had gone ahead in the
top of the ninth, 8-7, when Joe Rudi led off with a triple off the
left field wall, just before Brian Downing slugged a homer into the
left field screen. |
